El dúo está formado por el MC Guru y DJ Premier, y proceden de Brooklyn, Nueva York. Durante su carrera, el dúo, básicamente, personificó el sonido Nueva York. La carrera en su totalidad ha sido y será muy respetada, pero especialmente Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992) y Moment of Truth (1998) han sido los albums con mejor crítica entre los especialistas. La canción "Jazz Thang", que aparece en la OST de la película de Spike Lee, Mo' Better Blues, ayudó a establecer el sonido jazz rap, siendo uno de los pioneros, aunque ellos mismos consideran que su sonido únicamente es hardcore hip hop.

DJ Premier El grupo se fundó en 1987, con Guru, DJ 1,2 B Down, Mike Dee y varios productores como Donald D, J.V. Johnson o DJ Mark The 45 King. En 1989 Guru y DJ Premier (trabajando entonces bajo el nombre de Waxmaster C) se unieron por primera vez. Ese mismo año sacarían su primer single, "Words I Manifest", y su primer álbum, No More Mr. Nice Guy, que a diferencia de otros albums posteriores no aborda temas sociales ni políticos, centrándose más en canciones amorosas y presumidas. No More Mr. Nice Guy alcanzó el #83 en la lista de albums R&B/Hip Hop de Billboard, y el single "Positivity" llegó al #19 en la lista Billboard's Hot Rap Singles.

En 1998 con Moment of Truth, el álbum con más éxito comercialmente hablando. Siguiendo el ejemplo de doble cd de 2Pac, Gangstarr sacó a la venta Full Clip
